Buddy Ford Productions brought the AMA Flat Track Championship back to Vernon Downs for the first time since 2003 when Kenny Coolbeth dominated the New York mile. It appeared Mother Nature would once again put the series on hold, but in the end defending Grand National Champion, Kenny Coolbeth, took his Harley-Davidson Motor Company XR-750 to a commanding 15 second win.

There was a great race, but it was for second, Screamin' Eagle teammates Bryan Smith and Jared Mees wound up second and third after major position changes over the last few laps.

With the weather man calling for an 80 percent chance of thunder storms the outlook was bleak, but minor showers were actually helping the pea gravel oval until the last practice / qualifying session was about to hit the track. What started as a light shower, quickly turned into a deluge. The skies quickly cleared, but the sun was going down and the track just would not dry. Persistent work by the track personnel, Buddy Ford's crew and the AMA finally paid off with a very racy track.

. Coolbeth got the hole shot in the twenty five lap National with American Suzuki / Parts Unlimited's JR Schnabel right behind. This lasted for two laps until Chris Carr Racing / Drag Specialties' Chris Carr and Schnabel's teammate Jake Johnson blasted by. Schnabel would drift all the way back to a fifteenth place finish.

Carr appeared to be locked into second but Moroney's Harley-Davidson / Screamin' Eagle's Bryan Smith was working on Johnson. Smith was able to take third on lap eight with Johnson, Schnabel, Blue Springs Harley-Davidson / Screamin Eagle's Jared Mees and Latus Harley-Davidson / Screamin' Eagle's Joe Kopp bunched behind.

As Coolbeth pulled to a impressive lead, Carr cushion began to disappear, but Smith was joined by two of the young guns PBW / Fresno Harley-Davidson / Rod Lake / Goad Family's Brandon Bergen and SuperTrapp's / Silkolene's Matthew Weidman. The two youngsters were charging to the front and on lap 22 it turned into a four rider battle over second.

Smith was able to pull it off, but Mees came out of nowhere to grab the last podium spot. Bergen dropped Carr to fifth as Weidman grabbed sixth. The Halbert brothers were next with Zanotti Racing / A&A Racing's Jethro passing Glassman / LZ Racing's Sammy on the last lap.
Johnson dropped to ninth over Kopp, Aprilia USA / Lloyd Brothers Racing's Henry Wiles, Bartel's Harley-Davidson / Rogers Lake Racing's Shaun Russell and fast qualifier Nick Cummings (Jack Daniels / Gutterridge Harley-Davidson).

Earlier in the night Aprilia USA / Lloyd Brothers Motorsports' Chad Cose won the Expert Twin National, giving Aprilia it's first major dirt track win. Cose smoothly worked his way to the front of the 12 lap main and pulled to a three second lead.

Action Motorsports / Moose Racing's Brandon Robinson took second from early leader Harv's Harley-Davidson / American Supercamp's Kyle Wyman.

The first main of the night was the Pro Sport race and it turned into a dandy as AGV / Motion Pro / West Coast Hot Shoes' James Rispoli took off on his Honda, but Rispoli perhaps used up too much of his tire and Lancaster Harley-Davidson / Bromley's / American Suzuki's Shayna Texter ran him down and took the win on the last lap. The promoter's son Shawn Ford finished a strong third.

Round Two of the AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Championship came to the Smokey Mountains and the Volunteer Speedway for the first time Saturday night. Blue Springs Screamin Eagle’s Jared Mees proved to be the master of the high banked bowl of a race track.

Mees took over the lead on the twenty five lap main event on lap three, from Rogers Lake Racing / Bartels Harley-Davidson’s Shaun Russell and never looked back, winning the fourth National of his brief career.

National Cycle / Coziahr Harley-Davidson’s Johnny Murphree worked his way up to second, passing his former traveling partner to third on lap seven. Murphree then settled in to post his best finish in some time. Murphree had to hold off the late race charge of American Suzuki / Parts Unlimited’s Jake Johnson as the Suzuki pilot worked his way up from a seventh place start, giving Suzuki it’s first podium in the twins class.

Russell was under constant attack as Harley-Davidson Motor Company / Screamin Eagle’s Kenny Coolbeth took fourth away with just two laps remaining. Coolbeth had started on the second row and methodically worked his way through traffic, settling into fourth as the laps ran out.

Paul Lynch posted a strong ride on his own Harley-Davidson grabbing sixth when Screamin’ Eagle Latus Harley-Davidson’s Joe Kopp suffered a flat tire within sight of the finish. Kopp tried to struggle home, but dropped all the way to fourteenth.

Seven time Grand National Champion Chris Carr got off to a good start on his Quality Checked Certified Pre-Owned Ford backed Harley-Davidson, but wasn’t able to keep pace and dropped from a high water position of fourth to a seventh place finish.

American Harley-Davidson / Dick Ford / R&J Racing’s Rob Pearson and American Suzuki / Parts Unlimited’s JR Schnabel had a great race for eighth with Pearson getting the upper hand.

A short distance back another great race was going on between Moroney’s Harley-Davidson / Screamin’ Eagle’s Bryan Smith and R&D Machine / KK Motorcycle Supply’s AJ Eslick. Eslick took the spot on lap twenty four as they all moved up one spot after Kopp’s misfortune.

American Harley-Davidson’s Joe Hartrich’s strong heat race performance put him on row one for his first National main event appearance, the youngster came away with a sixteenth place finish.

Action Motorsports / Moose Racing’s Brandon Robinson won the 450 Pro Sport Support race after a tight race with Mike Caves / Mack Daddy Racing’s Kyle Snyder and Pure Attitude / RLJ Engines’ Brad Hazel.

The win propels Mees into first place in the AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Twins Championship point standings. Mees now holds a narrow one point lead over Defending Grand National Champion Kenny Coolbeth. Chris Carr is just eight points back with Jake Johnson sitting in fourth.

The combined Twins and Singles points standings have two time winner Johnson holding a five point lead over Coolbeth with Mees and Carr third and fourth.
